Stop Downplaying and Underselling Yourself

Stop Downplaying and Underselling Yourself

🤔Imagine this... I was mock interviewing with a client for a DIRECTOR position, and I asked her to tell me about a project she was most proud of.

You know, standard, behavioral-based interview question.

🙇‍♀Her voice got very quiet, and she said, "I assisted in helping the team to..."

🫵I interrupted her and asked her, "Did you 'assist' or did you RUN THE WHOLE DARN THING?"

😂She laughed, and with a strong, confident voice, said, "I ran the whole darn thing." Then we practiced how she could sell that (you know, a bit more elegantly 😉)

💁‍♀️Or how about the transitional teacher when I asked her if she led adult trainings, she said, "I ONLY did it for my team."

✅This IS leading adult trainings!!!
✅And I helped her to speak positively about it!

🎯I say it all the time if you don't think you can do it, nobody else is going to think that you can do it.
🎯Get rid of the words: just, only, assist, help, and OWN your AWESOMNESS!
🎯You are not the same as every other candidate, every other teacher, every other director.
🎯What have YOU accomplished?

✅Always be truthful.
✅For goodness sakes, never make anything up.
✅But also, stop being afraid to take credit for what you have accomplished!

❤ Cindy
