The Red Dress, The Commercial, and Finding Your Dream Job
Sometime ago, (and I'm dating myself here) there was a commercial featuring a red dress on a hanger, outside the closet door. And a woman, that kept admiring the dress, while eating the food that was being advertised.
The commercial showed the passing of time, with the woman eating the food, and smiling at the dress. No words were said. We understood her goal. She understood her goal.
She wanted to be able to wear that red dress. This is what she need to do to wear that red dress. No mention was made of weight loss. She was merely doing what she had to do to reach her goal.
Okay, I know. I hear you. It was a commercial. She is an actor. Yes, I get it.
But here's the take home message of that simple ad. It was all focused on a goal. Wearing that red dress. And at the end of the commercial, she rocks it in that red dress.
Before you stop reading, I am not here to talk about weight loss. I've been up that up and down that rollercoaster many times in my life. But I am here to talk about GOALS or your WHY. That's what is important in your job search.
There are really so many options when looking to return to the workforce, and it's not up to the job to find you, but up to you to be in the wonderful position of power, where you get to CHOOSE. Decide what you want. Are there any must haves on your list?
What kind of schedule works for you? Believe me, there are advantages and disadvantages to all of them, it depends on YOU, YOUR life, YOUR goals, YOUR needs. (think hours, flexibility, remote, in person, full time, part time, travel, commute)
What are your salary requirements? Of course we need to be realistic here. It's unlikely to find a job for 15 hours a week paying $90,000, but I do have clients returning to the workforce at all levels, earning everything from $30,000 to $150,000 a year. Yeah, with gaps on their resumes.
How much responsibility are you looking for. I always say it. We want different things at different stages of our lives. Is this the time when you want to give 110% to your career advancement, or do you want a part time job to mentally challenge you and leave you fulfilled for a few hours a week while the kids are in school. Or something in between. All good choices, but it's important to know what you are looking for so you find the right jobs.
Same career or a new one? Career pivots are exceptionally common, especially for moms. Because what you did when you were 22 may not be what you are passionate about at 42 or 52. And yes, nearly all of my clients are in their 40s and 50s.
So think about the woman admiring the red dress and her single goal to get there. What are your goals? As we approach the end of 2021, take the time to reflect upon your goals for the new year. We can never change the past, but can always work towards changing the future. Let's chat about how I can help you make your 2022 goals a reality. Free discovery call to talk about YOU.
