What NOT to Do at a Networking Event
šThe simplest networking tricks you arenāt using. š Put your phone away and other easy to do tips with maximum rewards, whether you are at a networking event or your 2nd cousinās barbeque.
1ļøā£ Put your phone away.
Thereās nothing that screams I donāt want to be here more than someone scrolling through their Instagram while other people are talking. ā
2ļøā£ Get there early, so that you donāt have to face an already crowded room, where everyone already seems to be talking to someone and you feel like youāre back at the playground trying to make a friend. Ask the host or event coordinator to introduce you. š¤
3ļøā£ Uncross your arms. Smile. Turn your body to face the person you are speaking with. Make eye contact, and truly listen to them, asking meaningful, open ended questions. Donāt just wait for a moment when you can interject. Be a thoughtful conversationalist, encouraging and adding value. š
4ļøā£ Be a giver not a taker. You arenāt asking people for a job, and certainly not the first time you meet them. Provide value for them, not just for yourself. š
