Video- How to Prepare for a Telephone Interview
Tremendously important, yet always downplayed, the phone interview, otherwise known as the phone screening is the most important first step in the job search interview process.
This is the opportunity everyone wants. An interview. A chance to be more than just a piece of paper. Haven’t we all thought this. If I could just talk to someone, I could show how great I am for this job. That you have skills, the knowledge, the passion, oh, and that you actually know what the job is about.
Assuming that the phone screening is easy and you can just wing it, is going to be damaging to your chance of moving forward. Face it, this is not the first time the screener is conducting a phone interview. They can tell if you have prepared and put in the effort (ahhh, back to your Personal Brand) or are just making it up as you go along.
Can the interview be short. Yes. Maybe 15 minutes. Which can actually be a looooong time. Try talking for 15 minutes to a total stranger at a party. That’s enough time to decide if you are loving the conversation, or desperately for a trap door, or an excuse to help the hostess wash dishes to escape.
A really great phone interview can last an hour. YAY! Moving on to the next level! Think passion. Stories. Connections.
While you don’t need to worry about wearing yoga pants, hear why you should still dress the part, put on a dab of lipstick and wear a smile if you want to move to the next level.
