Don't Forget the Little Details
There is so much pressure and effort put into the content, matching keywords, rewriting summaries, and changing the skills section, that sometimes we forget.
📑We forget about small details that actually make a difference.
Signs that show an employer that in spite of what you wrote, you actually do not pay close attention to detail and make sure that every T is crossed and every i is dotted.
🙈I have reviewed thousands of resumes... Resumes that people are actively using to apply to jobs, and here are some of the small oops that I have seen on actual resumes, that can prevent you from getting an interview.
➡️Spelling errors and wrong words. Yes. I've even seen people misspell the name of the company they are applying to on their cover letters.
➡️Wrong verb tenses. If you are currently working at that position, the verb tenses should be present. If the position was in the past, verb tenses should be past tense.
➡️A array of different font styles and sizes throughout the resume, in places where they should be consistent.
➡️Bullet points of varying sizes and shapes.
➡️Sections and dates that do not line up, and varying amounts of spaces between sections.
➡️Inconsistency of when you are using capitalization, bold, and italic. Think section titles.
➡️Poor use of space. Lots of blank space or so much content that there is no white space at all.
➡️Using the same words over and over and over again. For example, starting every line with: Responsible for...
➡️Including references, or the words "references available upon request" That's an outdated practice, and you don't want to appear too old.
➡️Including photos, personal information, marital status, and hobbies. Those don't belong on your resume.
➡️Using outdated lingo that is no longer relevant.
➡️Including every job you have had since you scooped ice cream when you were 16 years old. Only include 10-15 years of work history.
✅Your resume is a reflection of the quality of your work.
💓I KNOW how hard it is to make sure there are no spelling errors. I write content EVERY DAY. And my typing skills leave something to be desired. 😉
💓It can be challenging. So, here's what you need to do...
✅Take a deep breath, and take the extra time and effort to make sure that all your T's are crossed and all your i's are dotted.
✅Because wouldn't it be a shame to spend so much time targeting your resume, and then make one of the easily avoidable errors, and not get the chance for an interview.
🤩There are so many people applying for each and every job. Let's make you stand out!! 💪
